don't hate either.
google maps is great. vs code is great.
lot of great stuff.
just want to be independent.
G:
1. start slow
2. one by one account
3. update password manager synchronistical-like
4. don't delete email addresses, keep them and use them
keep them for email. and for like docs or similar services.
the idea is changing log-ins to websites using your own email addresses.
eg. you could sign into twitter with mytwitter@your_domain
i recommend the micro plan on migadu.com for hosting your email. you pay a very reasonable flat fee per year and can use more than one domain. it has served me well for years.
W:
1. back up
2. list possible problems
3. go through software and check for 1 and 2 above
4. double check
let's spend a good week slowly starting and documenting.
and then we will expand..
G:
i'll start with the biggest uses of me logging in with gmail..
google has been the heart of my email and online stuff since gmail
hotmail was my first, and yahoo, and 2 or 3 from mail dot com
there was spymac which messed up.. they promised a gig then disappeared
hotmail, yahoo, forums, chats
then gmail.. google was like a rock star at the time
at first it was invite only. i had fun selling invites for 99c on ebay.
i registered a few. and from then til now almost all sign-ups to websites have been using them.
not too long ago, i lost an account. it was mainly my fault, and i learned a lesson. i had a simple password i'd had on there for years. one day, i was locked out of it. goodle said they couldn't tell who owned the account, and as i didn't have any personal info on the account or proof it was mine, it was gone. i had that account as a sign-in to a domain registrar! i was able to sign in, and change my email address but it could've been so much worse.
so pro-actively..

plan:
laptop - pop os
desktop - ubuntu studio
i've stayed with windows too long for convenience
and i use wsl a lot. i don't know if moving stuff from wsl to proper l is easy.
i was thinking about debian, especially mx-linux which i like.
and i thought about debian servers..
but i guess ubuntu is easy.. i don't really want an extra headache..
and i don't want any snaps or whatever installed, which is what standard ubuntu does, and so looked at distros without.
i love mint, i've used it a lot but i haven't tried pop os yet and heard and read good things about it. i think it'll be good for my laptop.
i think ubuntu studio looks cool. i can try and make some music!
bitwarden for passwords and authentication
um..
i'll make another post in a week.. on 23 day!
